Bitcoin client doesn’t reflect address balance shown in blockexplorer

line

So, I kept a bitcoin client running on a machine more or less continuously, although I recently noticed it had been offline for 4 or 5 months. When I fire it up now, the total BTC in my account does match what I see in blockexplorer, and it shows no transactions in the last several months, even though these transactions show up in blockexplorer.

Also, the .dat files (blockchains) are huge, but apparently not huge enough (Is that file supposed to be 2 GB at this point?) – mine is only around 1GB, and I think the client may be crashing before it has “caught up”.

There's plenty of free space on that computer, so what should I do to get my client in sync with the BTC network?
